Lake Ruth – New York City’s Baroque Indie Secret

Hey Everyone!

I hope you are all staying safe and keeping well!

I wanted to send a little message out to you all to tell you that we’re all good at this end of the world and that I sincerely hope that you are too! I hope this small message can, it some small way, bring some joy into your life!

If you are in need of something groovy to check out while you spend some time at home, here is a band that I discovered a couple of years ago and that I really enjoy. I hope you enjoy the grooves, too! The bass on this new release gives me crazy smiles. 🙂

The band is Lake Ruth from New York, featuring Hewson Chen (of The New Lines), drummer Matt Schulz (of Enon and Holy Fuck) and vocalist Allison Brice (of The Eighteenth Day of May) and the newest release is a gorgeous 10″ EP called “Crying Someone Else’s Tears” from german indie label Kleine Untergrund Schallplatten. (If you’re asking me how the hell I find these things the answer is simple: follow the artist on BandCamp in order to be informed of new releases!).

This latest offering from Lake Ruth really, REALLY reminds me of “Good Humor” era Saint Etienne (in a very GOOD way!), ax if it had been sung by Trish Keenan, the singer from Broadcast. (Look them up if you don’t know Broadcast… they are cool, but have a bit of a sinister vibe going on)!

Lake Ruth have been alternately described as dreampop, baroque, and indie pop. I just like whatever it is they’re doing and I’m glad to have some new music from them!

I got the limited edition 10″ in the mail today via Discogs. I bought it without having ever heard it because I already had all their other stuff and I was sure that I would enjoy it… what I hadn’t realized was how MUCH I would enjoy it!

Listen to the bass in the first track “Sad Song” and the overall vibe of the second track “Lonely Street” and tell me I’m wrong… I promise: this will BLOW your minds:

Everything is available digitally, so there is no excuse not to stock up and start enjoying! You can stream it via Spotify, or support the artist directly via Bandcamp (See below). As always: I highly recommend the latter as you can download the files so you never lose them if Spotify drops them randomly.

I hope you enjoy and that it makes you sway through your day!
